Tucked away in a quaint corner just outside of Stratford-upon-Avon is a delightful bed and breakfast known as the Victoria Spa Lodge. When one thinks of traversing the British countryside and staying at little Inns this is a picture perfect example of what can be expected.
Built in 1837, Princess Victoria herself stayed here and bestowed her name on the spa before ascending to the throne as Queen. Although no longer a spa the property is rich in history and well taken care of by its current owners. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, but do not expect standards of a luxury boutique hotel. This is a bed & breakfast and a historic property. All that being said, the dining room is a true step back in time. Elegantly appointed in rich fabrics, furniture, and decorations of the Victorian era one can imagine the days of a young Princess Victoria taking spa treatments alongside other notables of the time. Attention to detail is evident in this grand room, and the actual meal is a terrific compliment.
The grounds themselves are impeccably tailored in the true English garden style, and just around the back is the canal. If you take a walk leading away from town a few hundred yards down you will come across one of the intricate lock systems the British canals are noted for. During the summer you may even be able to catch a glimpse of the hand operated canals in operation as holiday makers cruise along in their narrow boats.
Of course there are fancier places to stay, but a night or two at the Victoria Spa Lodge will surely be a highlight to any holiday. You can have fancy anytime, but you can rarely lay claim to having slept in the same building as someone the stature of Queen Victoria.
