Hangin' in Mexico City

The Heart of Mexico
Mexico city is a mixture of old and new sublimely intertwined. It is all at once a view into the distant past and breath of all that modern architecture and society has to offer. From some of the best museums in the world to traditional arts and crafts it delights the senses.
Having been in the city many times I have a fondness for the Condessa area. The nightlife is lovely and it is a safer area than some others. The streets are dotted with cafes and shops, and the atmosphere is much like any European city but of course it is still North America.
There are many hotels in the city to choose from, but I would suggest only a few. The Condessa DF is a charming little hotel on a quiet corner. The rooms are all harwood floors, well appointed, and large. The top suite is worth the extra money just for the huge balcony surrounding the room if nothing else, but the hotel itself is not without its issues. First of all, it is a trendy place for locals and tourists to hang out in the evenings, and despite the shutters that are closed in an attempt to cut off the rooms from the courtyard within, the noise can be a bit disturbing. Second, during my stay a couple in the suite next to mine actually had property stolen while they were downstairs for breakfast. According to the staff, this was not a rare occurrence, and while not unusual it should not be a regular problem at an upscale property.
One of the nicest properties in the Condessa is the Red Tree House. Jorge, the proprietor, is a delight, and his welcoming smile and grand hospitality are unparalleled. The building itself was on old villa lovingly and painstakingly restored and becomes a home away from home to guests rather than a sterile or trendy place to drop one's luggage.
Now, once you have chosen your temporary home it is time to hit the sights. A week in Mexico City will not even be enough to see all there is to offer. If the cosmopolitan lifestyle is what gets you excited the city is teeming with activity. If culture draws you in there are museums and even the Ballet del Artes, where folklorico shows can be seen twice a week, not to mention some of the finest operatic performances in the world. If ancient history thrills your senses then head for the ruins, and they are everywhere. Whether it is the Templo Mayor in the heart of the city or the pyramids of the sun and moon at Teotihuacan 31 miles north east. The sheer magnitude of what was left behind will astound you.
With all there is to see and do in Mexico City you cannot forget the people. They will make you feel at home. As if you are just coming to visit and hang with friends. Yes, there is crime, but there is crime everywhere. Take precautions and don't behave in a way that draws overwhelming attention to your antics. Most of all, enjoy one of the most endearing cities in North America.
